Chinalco Decision Won't Affect China-Aust Trade Deal-Govt

A free trade deal between China and Australia won't be conditional on the Government giving the green light to Chinalco's grab for a bigger share of Rio Tinto, Trade Minister Simon Crean says."A Chinalco decision is a matter for advice from the FIRB to the treasurer and decision by him, it is not conditional on this at all," Mr Crean told reporters."Obviously the treasurer will take into account (national interest) concerns when he makes the decision."People do need to understand the importance of investment to economic development ... the approach we're pursuing with China is no different that we're pursuing with every other country."Mr Crean made the comments after speaking to the Australia-China Business Council, where the long-running negotiations for a free trade deal had been discussed.Mr Crean said the Chinalco-Rio Tinto deal had not been canvassed during free trade discussions.
